English complaint No. 1

Why is it that people get objects confused with people. While applying for jobs it seems to me that a lot of people are confused with the terms Reference, and Referee.

A reference, is something you can point at - as physical thing. In most cases you have a "Reference letter" - which is from someone other than you, and is used to refer to you as a good/bad/ugly person.

A referee is someone whom you can refer people to. They say how good/bad/ugly you are.

To use this in a non-job context..... a reference is like when you drive your car, you use the side of the road as a reference not to crash. If you did crash and someone saw it - you would point the police to a referee to tell them what happened.
